What this means
Every state runs an Immunization Information System (IIS) — a confidential database that records every shot given inside the state, used by providers, schools, and public health. The CDC target for childhood "complete by age 36 months" coverage is 90%+. Most states sit in the 70–80% range, with some counties below 50%. Lower coverage opens the door to outbreaks of measles, whooping cough, and chickenpox.
What you can do
- Parents: ask your pediatrician to check your child's record in the state IIS — it follows them across providers.
- Adults: yearly flu shot · COVID booster if 65+ or high-risk · Tdap every 10 years · shingles after 50 · pneumococcal at 65.
- Free or low-cost vaccines: Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, county health departments, and Federally Qualified Health Centers.
